My Aching Back… Stupid Mattress….

So, last year we broke down and bought ourselves a new mattress.  Tried it at the store and everything, felt great, way better than our previous mattress.  We decided to go a step down from our queen size bed since it’s a pain in the butt to get it up and down the stairs in our home, never mind the headboards for queen size beds, they don’t bend and fold like a mattress going up that stairwell (we have an older home) so a step down is what we got…

At the same time, we also decided to get the girls new mattresses and beds as well, the headboards for full size beds were almost a problem going up the stairs but none the less we made it happen.

Now, why am I talking about mattress we bought last year?  Because I HATE OUR MATTRESS!  I don’t know if it’s just the way *I* sleep or what, but every morning I wake up with a sore back!  I’d much rather sleep on the couch downstairs, in fact some nights I actually do because it’s more comfortable.  I wish we would have bought a higher end mattress one of those sleep number ones or something but those are just way out of our price range.

I need a new mattress, but with this one being only a year old, I just can’t justify it!  So what do I do?  I think that if I buy things it will make it better… Yeah RIGHT!  We didn’t buy a whole new bed frame or anything and truthfully our room is pretty small so the frame it’s on now is great, but I’d love a flat nice headboard, maybe a leather headboard, something to make our bed look a little nicer against the wall.  It would be nice, but is that going to solve my sleep problem?  Nope!

So maybe I’ll skip the headboard and ‘accessory’ shopping for now, save that money and put it in a “Get Me A New Mattress” fund!

The past few Black Fridays, one or more of the department stores have had memory foam mattress toppers for a reasonable price (queen was $25 I think). We had one for several years and while it did not completely solve the cruddy mattress problem, it helped enough that we were able to survive until we could afford a new one. When the time comes to buy a new mattress, check out furniture clearance centers. We went to Raymour and Flanigan’s clearance center near us and bought a king size memory foam mattress and box springs for under $1000. I know it sounds like a lot, but it is a steal for a memory foam mattress. In the actual store the set retails for over $2500.

If you are waking up with a back ache from your mattress then it sounds to me like your mattress has already failed you and putting a topper on a broken down mattress is like putting a band-aide on a open gaping wound. The reason it broke down is because of the way it is constructed and the materials used to make it.

There is a lot to know when buying a new mattress. Is it comfortable? Will it be comfortable once I get it home and for how long? Is it full of toxic chemicals? Can each person have their own sleep comfort? What happens if my body changes or my needs change 10, 15 years down the road, am I going to have to buy a new mattress again?

These are all really good questions and things to research before buying a new mattress. What I have learned in all my years experience selling mattresses is it really does matter how the mattress is built. The best mattress for the price I have found is the one I sell in my store Mountain Air Organic Beds. It is made by Savvy Rest. I have 100% customer satisfaction because they have 3 whole months to try the mattress out and if it is to firm or soft we will replace the layer with a firmer or softer layer.

Meanwhile, I would have to say skip the furniture and save up for a Savvy Rest because sleep is much more important than a cheap bed! Without sleep our lives and our health suffer.
