Old is new again. Or rather, maybe it’s never gone out of style, can tradition do that? Celebrities have been seen wearing them, even Prince Charles has been spotted with one! One what? I’m talking about the men’s signet rings.
These rings used to represent wealth many years ago, and are traditionally engraved with a family crest and worn on the pinky finger. Crests would be used to press into wax seals, but today, it’s just a symbol of family tradition.
A lot of high profile people, and in fact, people in all walks of life seem to be taking to Signet Rings again. Years ago, you may have only seen a certain type of person wear a signet ring on their pinky, but today that’s not the case. Many men these days will be sporting one on their pinky finger, especially if they’re trying to make an effort over their looks!
Prices vary when it comes to signet rings, but if you have a man in your life who’s into style, into looking good, this old-fashioned elegance may be the perfect gift this year during the holidays. With the hot looks, style and culture coming back to life thanks to shows like Mad Men, these rings are starting to combat popularity among men.
Signets range from being oval shapes, to shields or even stone set. Finding the right jeweler is key to get your signet ring at the right price, and looking like you want it to look, the engraving is also cost varying. You may also find some places able to match surnames to a historic coat of arms to be placed on your ring.
If you’re looking to get very traditional, you can trace your lineage back centuries and include engraved initials or personal designs, you can even take your traditional coat of arms and create a ‘newer’ version for an up to date look.
A great first signet ring doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact a plain, 18ct gold ring could be a great starting point for men who may not be versed to wearing jewellery. A plain signet ring will allow them to be subtle with their jewellery, but also keep it masculine.
For those who are already fans of wearing rings and jewellery, stone encrusted rings with precious stones such as rubies are a great idea, you can even include elaborately carved signets with inlays of larger stones such as lapis instead of an engraved face.
Signet Rings are making a come back, some may be better suited for your man than others, but I think this is a great holiday gift this year no matter what style you choose for the man in your life.
