If you ask me, there’s one thing in the world that there’s just too little of, and it’s not love. I’m talking about
S-L-E-E-P. I’m always trying to get more of it and make the most out of what little time I do get.
So I had a thought… why not ask someone who’s truly an expert on the subject; someone who spends more time snoozing than most of us spend at work? I’m talking, of course, about Morris the Cat.
For those of you who don’t know him – or who’ve let sleep deprivation cloud your memory – Morris is the iconic spokescat for 9Lives cat food and has starred in over 50 commercials. When he’s not in front of the camera or chowing down on 9Lives, you can bet he’s napping in his trailer, ahem carrying case.
He’s taken time out of his busy schedule to answer some reader questions about the very im-purr-tant issue of sleep.
I’ve been experiencing difficulties with falling asleep, tossing and turning once my head hits the pillow. I don’t get it because I feel tired all day at work; then I come home, brush my teeth, flip on the TV, and just… lie there. I’m hoping I can learn from the expert. Morris, what am I doing wrong?
Sleepless in San Fur-nando
Dear Sleepless in San Fur-nando,
Your case, unfortunately, is not at all uncommon. When you’re going all day long at the speed of a cheetah, it’s no wonder your mind darts around like a red laser dot at bedtime. Luckily, as a cat, I spend up to 140 hours per week sleeping and I can tell you there is hope! For starters, I notice you mentioned turning on the TV before bed. Cats don’t watch TV – this is partly because the majority of us can’t speak English that well, but mostly because it interferes with our snooze time. Scientifically speaking, the ‘glow’ emitted by an electronic screen enters the brain and slows the release of melatonin, the hormone that helps us sleep. So next time you want to turn on the tube before bed, try counting sheep instead – or better yet, mice!
I’m a cat but as you know, even animals have ‘spirit animals.’ Mine is an owl – a night owl to be exact. I love to play “catch the speck of dust” or “chase your tail in the middle of the bed” into the wee hours of the morning. My humans have no idea what they’re missing out on. They just lay there snoring and swat at me when I come too close. How can I make them see that daytime is lame, and the real party happens under stars (the stick-on, glow-in-the-dark kind)?
Dear Hyper Harry,
Sadly, this is a case you may not win. Humans need their sleep at night. You get to spend all day snoozing and they only get a few precious hours when the sun goes down. Your humans can, however, make sure that they understand why it is you’re pouncing about and provide things to make nighttime more fun. For instance, your humans could consider getting a kitty condo or put out bags or boxes for you to explore. For extra credit, they can hide treats around the house so you can go on a midnight scavenger hunt. Or, if you’re really lucky, they’ll bring home a kitty best friend for you to play with whenever you please. Other cats might be up at night because they get hungry, in which case their humans could try an automatic food dispenser to provide small meals throughout the night. Remember, the more you let your humans sleep at night, the more energy they’ll have to play with you during the day!
My cat and I are BFFs. We do everything together – play, eat, snuggle – we make a purrfect team. But in the bedroom, I prefer to have my space. My cat, on the other hand, thinks there’s no better place to sleep than right on my head! Why does she do this? I’m not all that fun when I’m sleeping.
Dear Tired Tails,
You have been bestowed a great honor. As cats, we don’t always wear our hearts on our paws, but one tell-tail sign we love and trust you is when we choose to make YOU our bed. Plus, you’re warm. And getting our warmth from you helps us to conserve our own energy for more important things like eating. The rhythm of your breath also creates a calming effect and the curve of your face, stomach, or legs perfectly forms to our bodies. Basically, you’re like a waterbed, heated blanket, and memory foam all in one! So the next time your cat goes to curl up on you, think of it as a compliment and drift off to sleep knowing you are loved… and you’re very comfortable.
Thank you, Morris the Cat, for your wonderful nighttime tips! For more info on Morris’ mission to help cats and humans live well – including his initiative to donate one million 9Lives meals to rescue kitties – check out his Live Well & Prospurr website.

Hey Wrestling Addicted Mommy readers! Morris the Cat, from 9Lives cat food, here. (You may have thought that a cat’s only computer skills involve laying on the keyboard while others are trying to use it, but in fact, we are very tech savvy.)
For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve starred in over fifty 9Lives cat food commercials, am an advo-cat for kitty rescue, and was even crowned one of Advertising’s Greatest Icons by the Museum of Broadcast Communications. (But I must say, I took issue with this honor. I didn’t know I was advertising all those years… I just really love 9Lives!)
In case you couldn’t guess, I’m purr-ty much an expert when it comes to eating, and that’s the subject of my next venture. As you know, the holidays are ‘prime eating time’ and I want you to be able to chow down like a pro.
I also thought, with everyone in the holiday spirit, it’s a great time to give back. Lucky for you, giving back is as easy as using your opposable thumbs. With those two bad boys – and the rest of your fingers – you can help feed a kitty in need. Watch this video to find out how. (Spoiler Alert: It’s totally FREE!)
I don’t know about you but all this meowing about food has gotten me hungry.
I’ve made it my mission to help cats and humans eat well – and by extension – live well. (I’ve often said the key to life can be found in your food dish.) With that in mind, I invite you to check out my Official Guide to Eating, Munching, Snacking & More. If you’ve ever caught yourself inhaling your food between errands or carting your human kittens around… or if you mindlessly shovel in your dinner while catching up on the latest episode of “Meownton Abbey” or “Silicon Alleycat”… then this guide is for you!
In it, you’ll learn how to eat like the true foodie you were meant to be. On my site Prospurr.9Lives.com, you can also enter to win a customized drivable cooler, so if you do have to eat on the go, you can do so in style. And don’t forget to tweet #MorrisFeeds to give hungry kitties the gift of a tasty, hearty 9Lives meal.
On that note, my stomach is starting to rumble. What’s on the menu tonight, you ask? 9Lives Lean & Tasty and a side of Meaty Paté with Real Chicken. For a beverage I’ll be enjoying some delicious tap water. How about you?

I love the holiday season — the cold weather, the yummy food, and of course, all of the festivities! You know who else loves them too? My dog, Mello. I’m thinking it may be because of all the extra lovin’ and gifts he gets from the family.
It turns out that I’m not the only pet mama to spoil her pup during this time of year. That’s why I love this super cute website called TheNosePrint.com from Big Heart Pet Brands (the makers of Milk-Bone, Pup-Peroni, Canine Carry Outs, and Milo’s Kitchen). They really know how to celebrate the holidays with your pup!
On TheNosePrint.com, check out some of the fun doggy do-it-yourself ideas they’ve dreamed up. My favorite was the Pawticularly Personal Ornament. Mello can have the treats, and we get to keep the ornament. You let your kids make handprint ornaments, why not your furbaby too?
Other great homemade doggy gifts include a treat bouquet, a sweet treat jar, and a ho-ho-howliday treat bag. Yes, Mello is going to have a very holiday break.
The NosePrint.com also asked 3,000 Americans about their dog-related holiday habits, including whether their dog is involved in gift-giving, stocking-stuffing, Christmas sweater-wearing, and other holiday traditions.
What they found is that Americans really LOVE their pets. For instance, did you know 71% of dog parents give gifts to their pups? Have you completed your Christmas doggy shopping yet?
According to the survey, here are the top 5 reasons people give gifts to their dog:
1. To express love to my dog: 72%
2. Because it’s fun for me: 60%
3. To help my dog feel included like a family member: 54%
4. To give my dog a moment of happiness: 53%
5. To feel closer and bond with my dog: 43%
For me, I like to give presents to Mello because of all of these reasons. He’s such an important part of the family — I can’t imagine the holidays without him.
The study also shared how often dogs are included into popular Christmas traditions:
1. 48% of dog parents hang a Christmas stocking for their dog.
2. 43% of dog parents include a dog in a photo for a family holiday card.
3. 32% post photos of their dog on social media with a holiday message.
4. 29% dress up their dog in a holiday-themed costume or outfit.
5. 22% make or buy dog-themed holiday decorations.
For photos and instructions on how to add more dog-related fun to your home holiday traditions, check out these cool projects they have here.
Finally, want to know which states have the most spoiled pups?
The 2015 TheNosePrint.com Santa Dog Index ranks states based on how much, on average, dog parents will spend on their furry kids:
Top 10 States That Spend the Most on Holiday Gifts for Dogs:
1. New Jersey: $29.61 (average gift spending per dog for state residents)
2. New York: $28.95
3. Pennsylvania: $28.75
4. Utah: $27.75
5. Georgia: $27.04
6. California: $26.07
7. Washington: $25.81
8. Florida: $25.13
9. Illinois: $24.98
10. Virginia: $24.58
Apparently, it’s good to be a dog in the New York tri-state area. You can find the complete rankings of all 50 states at www.TheNosePrint.com.
One final thing: The folks at TheNosePrint.com have generously offered to give away a FREE Christmas doggy care package filled with some of the most delicious stocking stuffer treats for your pup.
To be entered to win the care package, use the giveaway widget below, and be sure to do the mandatory entry of visiting this DIY decor article on TheNosePrint.com and tell me in the comments below which DIY doggy decor project that you think your family would love best.

Move over, Dear Abby… 9Lives’ Morris the Cat is here to reveal advice on the issues you really care about, like yarn unspooling, feather chasing, and more.
A bona fide celebricat since he began doing commercials in the 1970s, America’s favorite ‘charmingly choosy’ feline has launched a “Dear Morris” column to help cats and humans alike make the most out of playtime. What’s more, Morris is also giving ‘Wrestling Addicted Mommy’ readers the chance to win a one-of-a-kind, customized 9Lives bean bag toss game at his website: http://prospurr.9lives.com/.
From Morris’ Mailbox:
I’ll be the first one to tell you I’m a playful guy. I like yarn, stuffed mice, boxes… you name it. But my human is never in the mood. Something about ‘work’ or ‘being tired,’ blah, blah, blah… meow, meow, meow. I try to tell her that a piece of string doesn’t wiggle itself! Alas, since my human will not play with me, I’ve taken to reading Proust… and trying to catch my own tail.
Furry and Frustrated
Dear Furry and Frustrated,
I’ve seen your case all too many times. Humans are often tempted to blame their unplayful attitude on ‘being too busy,’ but that’s rarely true. (Even the president plays golf!) What many humans don’t realize is that we cats don’t require a long, drawn-out play period. We like small bouts of play interspersed with two of our other favorite activities, resting and napping. So gently remind your human with a head-boop or a soft meow that you’re ready for some action—she can start off slow with Level 1 of my “Official Guide to Amusement, Entertainment, Playtime & More”(http://prospurr.9lives.com/). Also, tell your human to be on the lookout for when your tail is in an inverted “U” shape (like in the photo below). That’s a tell-tail sign (get it?!) that she should bring out the toys. Remember, fun is contagious… once your human sees what a blast you’re having, she’ll likely take some more time to enjoy herself as well.
Morris the Cat
I recently went to the pet store and came back with tons of new toys for my cat, Marvin. I was so excited to share some quality playtime with him that I could hardly wait for him to eat dinner! After he finished his 9Lives Plus Care (he’s a huge fan, by the way), I started waving his new toys around, but he just stared at me blankly—I got zip, zero, zilch! Morris, where did I go wrong? Does Marvin not like playing… or worse, does he not like me??
Confused in the Catskills
Dear Confused in the Catskills,
You’ve got nothing to worry about. I’m sure Marvin loves playing and I know he loves you. This was merely an instance of poor timing. You see, cats are often reluctant to play after mealtime. No one wants to jump around on a full stomach… even if you’re eating healthy with 9Lives Plus Care! The best time to play with Marvin is after he’s had a nice, long nap, and if he loves napping as much as I do, you’ll have many opportunities! And remember to make time for fun human games as well, like checkers, cards—or my personal favorite—cat’s cradle. The two of you will have mastered Level 5 of my “Official Guide” in no time.
Morris the Cat
I’ve always considered myself a “cat’s cat.” I’m a champion napper, an expert invisible bug chaser, and my hairballs? I can cough one so big you could use it as a toupee. That’s why I’m so distressed by what I’m about to tell you: I’ve never once caught that feather that dangles on the end of a stick. I see it, I lunge for it, and just when I think it’s within paw’s reach, it darts away again. It frankly has me questioning my cathood. What should I do?
Purr-plexed and Paw-ndering
Dear Purr-plexed and Paw-ndering,
It’s not your fault you haven’t caught the feather. What I’m about to say may come as a shock… there is a human on the other end of that feather, manipulating it like a marionette. It’s a conspiracy of gigantic proportions. You’ve never caught the feather because your human has never let you. If any of you humans out there are reading, please let your four-legged friends ‘win’ some of the time. It’s great to have a competitive streak playing a board game or on the ball court, but let us felines experience the sweet taste of victory (it actually tastes a lot like 9Lives). Besides, catching the feather, ball, or string will get your cat one step closer to their ultimate goal: world domination.
Morris the Cat

Do you know an extraordinary man with a cat?
Purina Pro Plan is shredding perceptions of both traditional cat food and who typically loves cats by launching the Purina Pro Plan #MenAndCatsContest to celebrate the new Savor Shredded Blend.
Purina Pro Plan is working to change the perception of dry cat food by introducing Savor Shredded Blend, an all-new mealtime experience that combines crunchy kibble and tender meaty shreds to provide both extraordinary nutrition and exceptional taste.
In order to change how people think of who typically loves cats, Purina Pro Plan is partnering with proud cat guy and “Devious Maids” actor Gilles Marini to search for extraordinary men who own and love cats. We are asking that people nominate the cat guys in their lives or that those extraordinary cat guys out there enter themselves by sharing a photo of them with their cat on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #MenAndCatsContest and tagging @ProPlanCat from August 31 – September 14. Those men could be featured in the 2016 Purina Pro Plan Extraordinary Men and Cats Calendar and win a year’s supply of Savor Shredded Blend.
The calendars will be used to raise funds for rescue groups nationwide through the Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue network.
For entry details and eligibility requirements and to learn more about Savor Shredded Blend, visit www.proplan.com/MenAndCatsContest and let’s not only change the perception of who loves cats, but also help rescue organizations across the country find loving, permanent homes for cats just like theirs.
